Lymington Architects | Contemporary Design + Heritage Conservation

Introduction

Forest Architecture is a design-led architect based in Lymington, working across the New Forest and surrounding coastal and rural areas. We design contemporary buildings that respond carefully to their setting, from historic town centres and village streets to countryside and coastal locations.

Our projects range from new homes and extensions to heritage buildings and developments in sensitive landscapes, always balancing creative design with a clear understanding of context and planning requirements.

Architecture in Lymington

Lymington is known for its historic character, Georgian streets, coastal setting, and proximity to the New Forest National Park. Architecture in the area often requires a sensitive and thoughtful approach, particularly where historic buildings, conservation areas, and landscape considerations influence design.

We work with these qualities to develop architecture that respects the local character while supporting modern living. Whether adapting an existing property or designing a new building, our aim is to create places that feel comfortable, well-proportioned, and connected to their surroundings.

A Historic Coastal Town Shaped by Salt + Trade

Lymington’s character has been shaped over centuries by its position on the edge of the Solent, where the town developed as a Georgian market centre closely connected to maritime trade and industry. Its broad High Street, lined with historic buildings, reflects this period of prosperity, while the surrounding landscape tells a quieter story of the industries that once supported it.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Lymington’s history is its association with salt production. From the medieval period through to the 19th century, the marshes along the coastline were used for salt-making, with seawater channelled into shallow pans and heated in boiler houses to extract salt. These industries left a lasting imprint on the landscape, shaping the pattern of fields, waterways, and coastal edges that still define the area today.

Although the salt industry has long since disappeared, its influence remains visible in the character of the coastal marshes and the relationship between land and water. The town itself continues to reflect its Georgian origins, with a strong sense of scale, proportion, and materiality that contributes to its distinctive identity.

For contemporary architecture, this layered history provides both a context and an opportunity. New buildings and interventions within Lymington can draw from these qualities — responding to the rhythm of the High Street, the openness of the marshes, and the interplay between built form and landscape — while introducing designs that support modern living.

Our Work in Lymington

We work with homeowners, landowners, and organisations on a range of architectural projects in and around Lymington, including:

  • New homes and replacement dwellings

  • Extensions and refurbishments

  • Listed and heritage buildings

  • Projects in conservation areas

  • Buildings in rural and coastal settings

Each project begins with understanding the site, the brief, and the aspirations of our clients. From there, we develop designs that respond carefully to both the architecture and its setting.

Heritage + Conservation

Lymington contains a significant number of historic buildings and conservation areas. Projects involving listed buildings or historic properties often require careful design and close engagement with planning and conservation considerations.

We have experience working with historic buildings and sensitive environments, developing proposals that respect the character of existing structures while allowing them to evolve for modern use.

Planning and Local Context

Planning considerations in Lymington can vary depending on the site and its surroundings. Some projects may be influenced by:

  • Conservation area guidance

  • Listed building status

  • New Forest National Park planning policies

  • Coastal and landscape considerations

Understanding these factors early helps ensure that designs are both ambitious and achievable. We support clients through each stage of the planning process, preparing proposals that respond clearly to the local context.

Our Approach

Our approach combines creative design with a clear and structured process. From the initial consultation through concept design, planning, and technical development, we guide clients through each stage of the architectural journey.

By working collaboratively with clients, consultants, and contractors, we aim to deliver buildings that are carefully considered, well crafted, and suited to the way people live and work.

The relationship between materials and their setting, creates a sense of belonging and grounds our buildings within their landscape. How these materials adjoin and sit alongside one another as well as how they appear against the backdrop of the landscape in which they are rooted, is of particular interest to how we operate as a practice.
